A coalition of progressive activists managed to partially gridlock rush hour traffic in Washington DC around the Capitol Tuesday morning by “blockading” several intersections to draw attention to causes like voting rights, environmental issues, and military spending while promoting the Biden “Build Back Better” plan.
Two were arrested as police attempted to clear the blockades and detour drivers around the protests.
Participating groups included ShutDownDC, SPACES In Action, CODEPINK, Arm in Arm Washington DC, Chesapeake Climate Action Network Action Fund, Extinction Rebellion DC, and others.
“As Congress prepares to leave town for the holidays, the opportunity to take critical legislative action on progressive priorities — priorities that Democrats and the Biden-Harris administration campaigned on — is rapidly disappearing,” ShutDownDC said in a press release.
“Recognizing the urgent moment, activists are gathering to demonstrate the immediate need to pass the Build Back Better Act, the Freedom To Vote Act, and so much more. ”
