“Same ban, sneakier packaging, return to sender.”
About 100 people gathered outside the US Customs and Border Protection agency early Tuesday in a continuing wave of protest against President Trump’s new order on immigration.
Following a large gathering outside the White House on Monday night attended by DNC chair Tom Perez, a second event – largely attended by area students – supported refugees and immigrants with signs and chants outside the CBP’s 14th Street entrance during morning rush hour.
“We’re all out here to say no, it’s a muslin ban no matter what it looks like,” said Ramah Kudaimi, an DC activist. “If [Trump’s] concern is safety, maybe stopping the US military machine is the first step to do that,” citing American military operations in Iraq and Pakistan as causes of radicalization.
Kudaimi expressed hope that the recent surge of energy in the activism sphere would eventually lead to interest in other areas of concern apart from the Trump administration, including police brutality.
Tuesday’s action lasted about one hour, during which protesters chanted “no more wars, no more fears, refugees are welcome here,” and heard a number of speakers against the new ban. One sign read: “Same ban, sneaker packaging, return to sender.”
