Friday September 11th marked the 42nd anniversary of the military dictatorship in Chile.
Armed forces bombed the presidential palace, La Moneda, in 1973, resulting in the ousting of d-elected president Salvador Allende and the beginning of Agosto Pinochet’s 17-year reign.
In Santiago images of Allende and leftist-leaning slogans were seen outside of the Estadio Nacional Julio Martinez , which was used a detention center following the coup.
Candles and photographs surrounded the venue as hundreds honored the victims of what many call Chile’s “dirty war.”
It’s estimated that over 40,000 were incarcerated at the soccer stadium during the regime.
