Today the Supreme Court announced the most anticipated case of this session, Obergefell v. Hodges. In the decision regarding same sex marriage, SCOTUS ruled in favor of Obergefell by a 5-4 margin.

The court had to rule on whether or not the Fourteenth Amendment requires (1) states to allow same sex marriage and/or (2) whether or not states have to recognize same sex marriages performed by another state. Ultimately, the court decided that states must allow same sex marriages.

Each of the four Justices that voted against the majority had their own dissent. Most notably, Justice Scalia,  explained that the majority opinion “is couched in a style that is as pretentious as its content is egotistic.”
