Today in Washington, anti-nuclear protesters called on President Obama to cut spending on the US nuclear arsenal. The federal government is currently planning to spend approximately 1 trillion dollars on nuclear weapons over the next 20 years.
As part of their demonstration, a 48-foot tall inflatable nuclear warhead was erected. Global Zero, the group who planned the protest, will be traveling to a number of other US cities in the following weeks to speak out against the US nuclear program. According to their website: “Global Zero leaders understand that the only way to eliminate the nuclear threat – including proliferation and nuclear terrorism – is to stop the spread of nuclear weapons, secure all nuclear materials and eliminate all nuclear weapons.”
News2share’s Trey Yingst spoke to Matt Brown, the co-founder of Global Zero, who said that if given the chance, he tell president Obama “Don’t spend 1 trillion dollars we don’t have on a nuclear arsenal we don’t need.”
