Code Pink, an anti-war women’s organization known for their protests against U.S. military interventionalism and violence, organized an upbeat rally on August 21st to advocate “hoops, not bombs.” While with varying degrees of expertise, people assembled to hula hoop as a way to peacefully and creatively express their dissatisfaction with the United States’ military campaigns abroad as well as police militarization at home. Such campaigns include military aid to Israel, airstrikes against targets in Iraq, and many more. Lauren Clemence filmed the event, and spoke to Alli McCracken, Code Pink’s National organizer, who underscored the contrast between the somber tone of some of their events and the upbeat tone of this one, while their overall message remains consistent.
