The Southampton County Militia held their inaugural muster on Saturday afternoon to sign up members at the Ivor, Virginia City Hall.
About 15 people attended today – they’ve advertised plans to recruit again Sunday as well and plan to begin training in December.
Southampton County Militia Commanding Officer Rosenfeld gave a presentation citing the Virginia State Constitution saying standing armies “should be avoided as dangerous to liberty.”
He names IRS, EPA, HHS, and SSA as examples of armed agencies resembling standing armies.
Rosenfeld said the Southampton County Militia will begin training their members monthly on subjects like firearms, physical fitness, land navigation, camping and bushcraft, first aid, and radio comms “for all contingencies” specifically citing disaster scenarios like hurricanes.
According to the presentation, the group will have a police/fire-style ranking structure with Captain, Lieutenant, and Staff Sergeant elected.
Militia members pay $100 annually, command staff pay $200, and members patched after three trainings.
“Alright, who’s ready to get started?”
A handful of people filled out paperwork to sign up for the Southampton County Militia, and the group is holding a second recruiting event tomorrow.
They begin training in December.
