“Close OpenAI or we’re all gonna die!” chanted protesters on Friday outside the San Francisco headquarters of OpenAI, an artificial intelligence (AI) research and deployment company.

“Sam Altman, kill yourself, but not humanity!” one yelled, referring to the CEO.
One speaker with the Stop AI protest explained “the primary demand of Stop AI is to permanently ban artificial super-intelligence and artificial general intelligence because we will never have expirable evidence before building either that they will stay safe forever. So for that reason, we should never build them.”
“The second demand of Stop AI is to put in place a citizens’ assembly in the United States government to have democratic control over the development of narrow AI systems, AI systems that are not general purpose, that we cannot lose control of, but that can take the jobs of people that don’t want their jobs to be taken by AI.”
“We should put the democratic control of what AI is built into the hands of the people, and permanently ban artificial super-intelligence.”
Police directed activists back to the sidewalk as they crossed into the street with signs reading ‘AI WILL KILL US ALL” and “Stolen Data is not innovation.”
Officer ultimately detained one person, issuing a single citation before the demonstration dispersed. The group plans to return to continue protesting next month.
