Anti-deportation protesters gathered outside the Metropolitan Detention Center throughout Monday, the fourth day of civil unrest in the city of Los Angeles.
In the later afternoon, police declared an unlawful assemble, using a myriad of force including flash grenades, 40mm foam rounds, and tear gas to repel and split up the crowd over several blocks.
As anti-ICE demonstrations took place, an apparent pair of counter-protesters arrived. While some protesters advocated to let them go, others struck one of the men while chasing him away. Bloodied, the man produced a knife (1:20 into this video) and continued to be chased until police arrived.
Police arrived, repelling the crowd with threats of force including launchers and batons.
“They protest and attack me, assault me, for my political ideas,” the man said before police escorted him away.
Los Angeles Police exchanged non-lethal rounds and tear gas with anti-ICE protesters who shot fireworks in their direction late into Monday night.
Several protesters successfully neutralized tear gas canisters under traffic cones or simply kicked them back at officers.
A wide gulf formed between protesters and the police. Some protesters continued throwing things at officers, while officers shot back with what I understand to be 40mm foam rounds (one of which struck News2Share’s Ford Fischer).
Protesters attempted to use garbage dumpsters as portable cover to advance toward police, which was momentarily successful but ultimately culminated in their retreat amidst additional munitions and tear gas.
