Reverend Al Sharpton, Martin Luther King III and filmmaker Spike Lee led hundreds of activists in the 63rd anniversary March on Washington on Friday, themed “Defend the Vote.”
“Donald Trump has got to go!” chanted activists behind them. “This is what democracy looks like!”
Martin Luther King III spoke Friday where his father MLK Jr spoke 63 years ago. King reflected on his father’s legacy and work, and emphasized that neither voting rights or the abolition of poverty are yet complete.
“After you dream, you wake up, and you confuse those of us who have dreamed the dream with being woke!” Reverend Al Sharpton explained at the 63rd anniversary March on Washington.
“Don’t apologize for being woke! Apologize for dreaming and staying in the bed.” “We are woke because we woke up with a dream in mind and we are in Washington DC to proclaim the dream is still alive!”
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke out Friday afternoon at the 63rd anniversary March on Washington, whose theme was “Defend the Vote.”
“We, the people, demand full protected and restored voting rights in the United States of America,” she said.
She also demanded that “one job, with no need for overtime, should be enough for our most basic needs, which also include rest.”
Senator Bernie Sanders spoke today at the 63rd anniversary March on Washington, where he reflected on having attended Martin Luther King’s original march.
“Dr King’s dream is under threat,” he said. “Donald Trump is an authoritarian who is deliberately trying to destroy faith in American democracy, create confusion, sow mistrust in our elections, and make it harder for Americans to vote.”
