“We work! We sweat! We want more in our checks!”
Today union workers picketed outside a Washington DC Safeway store to demand a contract with better wages and healthcare.
They say that if their demands aren’t met by March 5, they will vote on a strike.
“The greatest crime-fighting tool is a good paying job with good benefits,” said Aisha Braveboy, the State’s Attorney for Prince George’s County, Maryland.
Michelle Lee, a 32-year veteran of Safeway who works at store #1283 in Alexandria, VA, says “we help this company make billions of dollars.”
“All of us have made sacrifices for this company” she said to cheers. “This company better damn well give us a good contract!”
According to the UFCW Local 400 union, “25,000 grocery workers at hundreds of stores in the region could go out on strike” if their demands are not met by March 5.
